Password Protect PDF Free
Add military-grade 256-bit AES encryption to any PDF file in seconds. Set an open password so only authorized people can view the document, and control permissions like printing and copying. 100% free, browser-based, no files stored on our servers.
- Upload the PDF you want to protect by clicking "Upload" or dragging the file onto the tool.
- Enter a strong password in the "Set Password" field. Use a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols for maximum security.
- Confirm the password in the second field to avoid typos.
- Optionally, set document permissions to restrict printing, copying, or editing even for people who know the password.
- Click "Protect PDF" and download your encrypted, password-protected PDF file.
- Is PDF password protection free on PDFA2Z?
- Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, unlimited use.
- What encryption standard is used?
- We use AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit key), the same encryption standard used by governments and financial institutions worldwide. It is virtually impossible to brute-force.
- Can you recover my password if I forget it?
- No. For your security, your password is never stored on our servers. If you forget it, the document cannot be recovered. Please use a password manager to store important passwords.
- Can I restrict printing but still allow viewing?
- Yes. Use the permission settings to allow viewing but restrict printing, copying, or editing. Only people with the owner password can change these restrictions.
- Is the password-protected PDF compatible with Adobe Reader and other viewers?
- Yes. AES-256 encrypted PDFs are fully compatible with Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview (Mac), Foxit Reader, and all modern PDF viewers.
- Can I protect multiple PDFs at once?
- Currently, the tool processes one PDF at a time. For batch protection needs, contact us about API access.
- Will the file size increase after encryption?
- Yes, slightly — typically by a few kilobytes. The encryption overhead is minimal and will not noticeably affect the file size.
- What\
- An open password (user password) prevents anyone from opening the file without the password. An owner password (permissions password) allows viewing but restricts editing, printing, or copying — even without sharing the password.
- Can the password protection be opened on mobile devices?
- Yes. Password-protected PDFs open correctly in Adobe Acrobat Reader for Android and iOS, and other mobile PDF apps.
- Is my document uploaded to PDFA2Z servers?
- Your document is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS and processed temporarily. It is deleted immediately after you download the protected version.
- How do I create a strong password for my PDF?
- Use at least 12 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Avoid common words or birthdays. Use a password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password to generate and store it securely.
- Can I add password protection to a PDF that already has a password?
- You would need to unlock it first using our Unlock PDF tool, then re-protect it with the new password.
